I take a lot of inspiration from TV cooking shows and I have a ridiculous amout of cook books.  I frequently flick through them for inspiration, I might cook a new dish, for the first time, from the instructions and I’ll often refer back to it the first few times I cook, but as soon as I get the taste for it I’ll often ditch the recipe book and cook from memory and taste.  That’s not to say that I think the recipe wasn’t any good, its just that I’m more of an intuitive cook rather than one who enjoys following instructions methodically, I prefer a more off-piste approach.
